Dallas City Council Does Something Right?

I'm not one to advocate government's interference in a business's business. But... Many mom-and-pop convenience stores are under the impression that the more advertising signs the better. Their windows, doors, exterior walls and even carport support posts are covered with signs. Cluttered might be a better word. For years the Dallas Police have complained that covering the windows prevents them from easily seeing inside and makes the store a target for robbers. Good point. And neighborhood activists have complained that it makes the store an eyesore and brings down the area's value. Good point. And anyone who has taken Marketing 301 in college will tell you that with that many signs, customers seldom notice any at all. The signs just appear as a big blur.
Now Dallas City Hall has an ordinance. Windows and doors must be 80% clear. The police will like that. Robbers won't. And outside walls and facades must have no more than 25% of their surface covered with signs. No more clutter. And the business owners are given a one year grace period.
Two thumbs up to the Dallas City Council.
