César Chávez Avenue?
Some genius (genii?) at Dallas City Hall decided to conduct a poll on the renaming of Industrial Blvd. Of the six names suggested, César Chávez won a clear majority with 52%. "Oh no," the suits said, "we can't have that." But it gave the Hispanic community impetus for having a major city street named for the founder of the United Farm Workers. There's now a wind blowing toward renaming Ross Ave. As the argument goes, Ross Ave. is the address of the Cathedral Shrine of Guadalupe with a congregation that is predominantly Hispanic and also the address of the DISD administration office that oversees a student enrollment that is more than 60% Hispanic. There's a large number of Hispanic businesses on Ross. And there appears to be growing support from several major law firms housed in the Trammell Crow Center on Ross.
