Luis Yanez is the only athlete I've ever met that's going to the Olympics. We met at the Dallas Golden Gloves last February where he made an appearance, but not as a participant. He had been kicked off the team July 1 after missing three weeks of training camp and a tour of Argentina without permission. Yanez said he was tending to his sister, who was in drug rehab, and her four children. After his appeal to the USA Boxing judicial committee was rejected, he threatened to go to an independent arbitrator. A deal was soon worked out for him to return.
Luis fights in the 106 pound light flyweight division. He trains at the GTO gym in Oak Cliff, near the corner of S. Polk and Brooklyn Ave.
