This site, which I'm still lookinh into, apparently provides user names and passwords that can be used to "bypass compulsory registration" for a limited number of newspapers (
NYTimes & Post, Washington Post) and political blogs. I frequently read the
nytimes.com and don't recall being asked to register. But I found the link on Nancy Kruh's blog so it might be of some use.
